Personal Security Alarm For College Safety

by Kathi A Horell

My theory is that I never forgot about carrying a personal security alarm after I almost went missing at age 5. Mom says this took place at a ball game when I came along wearing the panda-designed Child Guard wireless alarm system.

The Child Guard receiver she wore was set to beep over a 434 MHz frequency if we got separated for more than a 6 to 30 feet range. The alarm warned her that I was about to pursue a hotdog vendor.

I am in college now, and once more, taking advantage of a personal security alarm for travel safety. I attend a New York film school and have my traveling cut out for me. I take a bicycle around the campus and am a happy commuter otherwise.

Travel safety products were what I surfed web sites for in preparation for college. Once I came across a 130 dB alarm with flashlight, I knew I had found the tightest couple in alarm merchandise territory.

I could turn the alarm on using two methods for this convenient personal security alarm. Either I press a button located on top or yank a pin attached to a keychain. As a superb bonus, I had the flashlight to fend danger off after dark.

A dual purpose 120 dB alarm further caught my eye, acting as a door alarm as well as personal alarm. The moment the door knob was moved, it would ring out. If it was not going with me, I could use it as an intruder alarm.

I experienced being bullied by a kid on campus into giving him my wallet. He had no gun or anything but threatened me with words. It was a knotty situation as my bike had stopped working and it must have seemed like he was merely assisting me.

As soon as I switched my personal security alarm on, he fled in panic. Some students notified a nearby patrol officer that I even had help in transporting my bike back to the dormitory.
